Portraits of Katerynych family (1846)

Taras Shevchenko

In February 1846 Shevchenko having mission of Archeographic Commission, visited Chernihiv province. During this trip he visited village Markivtsy in Kozelets county (now Bobrovytsya district, Chernihiv region), where he performed eight portraits of members family Katerinich [see A. Novitsky, Shevchenko as a painter. – Lviv – Moscow, 1914, p. 44].

From this set of portraits are known: a portrait of M. F. Katerynych, O. A. Katerynych, I. A. Katerynych, T. P. Katerynych and O. A. Afendyk.

All portraits which are preserved in the original, having author's date – 1846. Shevchenko could draw these portraits between February and April, because April 30 he was already in Kyiv, as evidenced receipt in getting him pay from Archeographic Commission (see "Shevchenko in the documents and materials", K., 1950, p. 83). These data are the basis for the specification of the date within the year.
