The plot can be associated with a not found Shevchenko's picture of "Orphan–boy shares the alms of the dog under the fence" (see comment number 228), for which the artist September 27, 1840 was awarded the silver medal of second-degree of the Academy [Taras Shevchenko: The documents and materials for the biography. 1814 – 1861. – K., 1982. – p. 27. – № 59, 60].

Small Shevchenko's thumbnail with similar composition placed on a worksheet to sketch V.I. Sternberg "Ukrainian tavern".

Dated 1840 in view of the semantic relationship this sepia and picture "Orphan–boy shares the alms of the dog under the fence", as well as the relationship in this period Shevchenko with A.A. Kozlov, to whom drawing was donated. Kozlov made a picture of Shevchenko in 1840 [Zhur P. Shevchenko's Petersburg. – K., 1972. – p. 98 – 99]
