Album of 1846 – 1850 № 108

Albums were deprived of Shevchenko during the first arrest 5.IV 1847, but in the absence of compromising materials were returned to him and were with him during his stay in Orsk fortress and during the Aral Expedition 1848 – 1849. For the second time and irrevocably albums selected in Shevchenko during the second arrest 27.IV 1850 [see "T. Shevchenko in the documents and materials", K., 1950, p. 166 – 167]. According to J. P. Zabila, until 1907 these albums were in the archives of the Police Department [see "Autographs and new works Shevchenko found in the archives of the Police Department", Kyiv, 1907]. In 1898, they was first time described by M. I. Storozhenko [see "New materials for biography Shevchenko", "Kyiv antiquity", 1898, Vol. XI, p. 421 – 435].

"Drawings that are in these books – as testified Shevchenko during interrogation in 1850 – drawn mostly in Little Russia in 1846 and a few in 1849 at the Aral Sea, on the orders of Lieutenant-Commander Butakov…" [«T. Shevchenko in the documents and materials", K., 1950, p. 167].

Drawings of 1846 made by Shevchenko (who was then in Kiev Archaeological Commission) while traveling on the Right Bank Ukraine (Kiev region, Volyn, Podillja) – a peasant types, landscapes, architectural motifs and more. The rest of the pictures belongs to the time of exile (1847 – 1850) – an image Kazakhs, camels, horses, expeditionary camps, Aral Sea coast. Drawings done mostly in pencil, in some cases, ink – pen.

Album of pictures, poetry and folk records [Shevchenko Institute of Literature, Kyiv, inv. 108] has 56 sheets, numbered from the top right. Description of drawings submitted for this numeration. Sheet size 11,9 × 17,3 cm. Fol. 29 missing, fol. 55 damaged, fol. 56 half (right side) glued to the cover. Figures are for 56 pages, 14 pages unused, 41 page filled with poetry and folk records.

Outline of female figure (fol. 1 v.), the human figure and head (fol. 5), repeated at number 84, illegible sketches hillocks or yurts (fol. 5), sketch of an unknown object (fol. 12) and architectural sketch (fol. 33) not reproduced here.
