Self-portrait 1861
Taras Shevchenko. Self-portrait.
[Petersburg]. [Jan – Feb 1861]. Oil on canvas (59 × 49 cm).
In the "Catalogue-guide of the Republican Shevchenko's anniversary exhibition" (K., 1941, p. 68, № 364) states that the portrait have the author's monogram and date: Ш || 1861, but after portrait restoring in 1948 – 1949 they not detected.
This portrait is an author's repeat of the self-portrait, exhibited at the academic exhibition in 1860.
Dated on the basis of A.M.Lazarevsky's mention:
"… January and February [1861], he sat in the room almost no leave it, only occasionally visiting a short acquaintance. During this time he continued his engraving, he paint a copy of his portrait, that was at the exhibition" (A.Lazarevsky, The last day of Shevchenko's life, "The Northern Bee", 1861, February, reprint, p. 1).
According to V.M.Lazarevsky, this portrait was intended by Shevchenko for the lottery in favor of publishing books for public schools (useful editions). V.M. Lazarevsky writes:
"This last was drawn in the lottery (20 tickets to 10 rubles) – winning architect A.I.Rezanov (later rector of Acad. Arts) and gave me" ("Russian bibliophile, SPB, 1914, № 1, p. 20).
O.M.Lazarevsky mistakenly identifies it as copy instead of author's repeat.
