Taras Shevchenko. Portrait of Ivan Ivanovich Gornostaev. Paper, etching 16.5 × 12.5 cm (31.5 × 21.8 cm). [St.Petersburg]. [I – II 1861]. Taras Shevchenko National Museum, inv. g – 681.

Portrait of I. I. Gornostaev not been completed due to the death of Shevchenko, what explains the absence of the author's signature.

Etching board, on which was engraved this portrait referred to in the description of things Shevchenko, made after his the death by M. Lazarevsky, entitled "Portrait of an unknown".

As a portrait of Gornostaev this work was published for the first time in the album "Shevchenko's etchings in the collection of V. Tarnowski", Kyiv, 1891, Tab. [27]. With the same determination it had been reproduced in the book by D. Rovinsky "Detailed dictionary of Russians engravers XVII – XIX century", St. Petersburg, II, 1895, p. 1174, № 7 and reproduction 1177 – 1178.

Publication of portrait with determination of Gornostaev initials made O.P. Novitsky [see "Taras Shevchenko as a painter", Lviv – Moscow, 1914, p. 81, № 635; reproductive. tab. 83].

Portrait of I. I. Gornostaev dated 1861 year – sometimes perform similar in nature and degree of skill to portrait of P. K. Klodt.
