Beneath the portrait – author's signature and date in mirror etched stroke: Shevchenko. 1860. Below, under the portrait engraved: Count Fedor Petrovich Tolstoy // in memory of 22 August 1858 year [memorable date specified in the text not solved].

Etching made from a photograph, registered in the Chestahivsky's list at number 33.

F. P. Tolstoy (1783 – 1873) – Russian sculptor, medalist and painter, vice president of the Academy of Arts. Together with his wife A. Tolstaja showed great concern towards liberation Shevchenko from exile and his return to St. Petersburg in 1858.

About friendships with family F. Tolstoy indicate records Shevchenko diary. March 23, 1858 – the day after his arrival in Petersburg – he recorded:

"At six o'clock in the evening along with Lazarevsky we went to the Countess N.I. Tolstaja. I have not seen anybody who met me so cordial and joyful, as I met up with my holy intercessor and Count Fedor Petrovich. This meeting was sincerely all related meetings. Much like I told her, but did not say anything".

Records of the Tolstoy family friendship with Shevchenko left in her memoirs C. F. Junge – daughter of F. P. Tolstoy [see C. F. Junge, Memories, Moskow, "Sphinx", [s. a.]].

In 1911 one of the prints of this etching exhibited at Shevchenko's exhibition in Moscow (Product, № 14); in 1929 – at the exhibition of works of Taras Shevchenko in Chernihiv (Catalogue, p. 27, № 1); in 1939 – at the Republican Shevchenko Jubilee exhibition in Kyiv (Product, № 284).
