Picture found on the back of the picture "Blind woman with daughter» during restoration of the sheet in 1955.

First mentioned in 1956 in the article by K.V. Chumak and V.H. Kosyan [Chumak K.V., Kosyan V.H. Renaissance creations // Art. – 1956. – ¹ 2. – p. 40].

Reproduced for the first time in 1961 (playing in the mirror) and is dated 1840 – 1842 [T. Shevchenko Complete Works: in 10 volumes. – K., 1961. – Vol. 7, bk. 2. – ¹ 256]

Identified in 1984 as a sketch for painting "Catherine" [Yatsyuk V. Attributing of some paintings Shevchenko // Folk art and ethnography. – 1984. – ¹ 2. – p. 23].

Dated by the time work on a painting.

Tereshchenko, since 1917 – the State Russian Museum (St. Petersburg) (recorded in 1928), 1932 transferred to Historical Museum in Kharkiv, then – Gallery of pictures by T.H. Shevchenko (Kharkiv), from 1940 – Central Museum of T.H. Shevchenko (Kyiv); from 1948 – State Museum of T.H. Shevchenko (Kyiv).
