The document of the Art Academy exam which was held November 28, 1841, stated: "By nature painting 3 – Shevchenko" [Ginzburg I.V. Shevchenko in the classroom of the Academy of Arts // Questions of art education. – L., 1975. – Vol. 13. – p. 95 – 96]. On receiving the third place in exam for etude oil paints Shevchenko mentions in his story "Artist". Sketch made of sitter T. Malyshev (his image – on the picture by M.I.Scotty) [Diary of artist A.N. Mokrytsky. – M., 1975. – Tab. 29], tentatively in October – November 1841

The article by R. Podberezky about the exhibition 1841, hosted to the annual meeting of the Arts Academy, held on September 28, mentions the work of Shevchenko "Germaphrodit" [Tygodnik Petersburgski. – 1842. – N 36. – p. 197 – 199] (see comment number 237). V.G. Shchurat identifies it with this picture [Shchurat V. On the life and works of Taras Shevchenko. – Lviv, 1914. – p. 8 – 9]. A.P. Novitsky in 1914 [Novitsky Ol. Taras Shevchenko as a painter. – Lviv, Moscow, 1914. – p. 83] denies this allegation and in the works register (p. 76, № 569) placed this sketch called "Sitter naked sitting on a red cloth".

Preserved pencil sketch of the prototype bearing at other angles (see additional images). After the decision of the Arts Academy of 9 March 1910, as stated in the inventory book of academic museum, sketch was acquired by Academy [Ginzburg I.V. Shevchenko and Briullov's school // Proceedings of ninth Shevchenko scientific conference. – K., 1961. – p. 171].
