On the left below the date and signature of the author: 1843 Shevchenko.
The original, owned by O. Kapnist, burned down in 1919 in the village Mikhailovka (now Lebedin district, Sumy region) during the fire of his estate. Description and reproduction presented by photograph, made in 1918 during the original exposure at the first exhibition of Ukrainian antiquities in Lebedin (Catalogue, p. 17, № 172).
This picture and its variants preceded the eponymous poem Shevchenko.
Picture correspond to the words of poem "Blind", which was published in 1845.
So on the street, under the fence,
More young minstrel was
And about the captives sang.
Over the fence listening Jaryna.
